Shayle Flesser’s Artist Statement
So many bellies of ravenous creatures must be looked after, garments bought, thieving hands guarded against and services employed in the face of tears and curses. How much happier is the woman who owes nothing to anybody except the one she can most easily refuse, herself.
(Seneca the Younger)
I decided I wanted to make images that would be both useful in daily life and address the female condition. I am attracted to images which display feminine power and vulnerability. I like to morph animals and humans to symbolize the attributes we take on as humans to construct our identity. I think about the relationship between natural and constructed worlds; how they are different creatures.
